Extreme IX is a carrier neutral, data centre neutral internet exchange point for Indian ISPs, local and international content providers, with nearly 200 leading ISPs as its customers. Currently, it is live and operational in five cities and aims to expand across 10 to 15 cities in 2019.

Extreme-IX was on the lookout for carrier neutral, scalable and secure infrastructure. With plans to grow across cities in 2019, the largest internet exchange in India partnered with STT GDC India with a win-win strategy in place.

Challenge

100% uptime, extreme security

Extreme-IX's challenge lay in choosing the right service provider that could ease its concerns around security and power availability. While evaluating colocation players, Extreme-IX was primarily looking for carrier neutral facilities, Rated-3 infrastructure and a partner that would address its infrastructure scalability requirements.

Solution

A professional datacentre service provider

Extreme-IX has deployed its IT infrastructure at STT GDC India's facilities in Delhi (STT Delhi DC 2 and STT Delhi DC 3), Hyderabad (STT Hyderabad DC 1), Mumbai (STT Mumbai DC 1), Chennai (STT Chennai DC 1) and Kolkata (STT Kolkata DC1).

Benefits

High uptime, no capex, optimized costs

STT GDC India was the perfect match for Extreme IX's requirements on infrastructure scalability, power efficiency, security, carrier neutrality. Another key factor that makes STT GDC India stand apart from the crowd of data centre players is the fact that their DCs are strategically located across India.

Extreme IX is a carrier neutral, data centre neutral internet exchange point for Indian ISPs, local and international content providers, with nearly 200 leading ISPs as its customers.

Currently, it is live and operational in five cities – Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata, and aims to expand across 10 to 15 cities in 2019.

Raunak Maheshwari, Director at Extreme-IX, explains that the internet exchange is basically an aggregation point where content providers and ISPs connect with each other. “This helps the ISPs bypass their traffic from expensive upstreams, which reduces costs, and secondly, it also provides fantastic user experience to their end users.” This drives the country’s internet infrastructure and helps with the fixed broadband penetration in India.

Challenge – The need for Neutral, Scalable and Secure Rated-3 infrastructure

The largest internet exchange in India, Extreme-IX, involves a lot of switches and routers across their data centres that need to be hosted in a protected environment.

Essentially, Extreme-IX’s challenge lay in choosing the right service provider that could ease its concerns around security and power availability. While evaluating colocation players, Extreme-IX was primarily looking for carrier neutral facilities, Rated-3 infrastructure and a partner that would address its infrastructure scalability requirements.

Maheshwari brings to light the importance of addressing the power challenge because not many DCs in India are power proficient. “These things are difficult to find in a data centre service provider in India”, he adds.

The combination of these critical factors led Extreme-IX to zero down on STT GDC India.

"It is very easy to work with the colocation player because it has robust processes in place. Their teams know what to do, how to do and when to do. Moreover, they understand customers’ priorities."

According to Maheshwari, another key factor that makes STT GDC India stand apart from the crowd of data centre players is the fact that their DCs are strategically located across India.

The difference between other data centres players and STT GDC India is that this is their main business and they are market leaders in this space.

Creating a mutually beneficial strategic partnership with STT GDC India

Acknowledging the partnership with STT GDC India, Maheshwari points out, “I believe the difference between other data centre players and STT GDC India is that this is their main business and they are market leaders in this space.” In line with the company’s vision to expand to other cities this year, Extreme-IX plans to set up its IT infra in Bengaluru with the support of STT GDC India.

“Our future engagement with them would be in Bengaluru. Precisely because of their matchless robust processes. STT GDC India understands our business and priorities. This relationship is a win-win for not only us and STT GDC India, but also a win-win scenario for our clients who are eventually going to partner with the colocation player to connect to us.”

We would like this relationship with STT GDC India to continue in the way it has been going on and we are very happy with the journey we are on, concludes Raunak Maheshwari, Director at Extreme-IX.
